Root Service Details
We prune above ground roots but may also need to shred some underground roots with our commercial grinder. When tree roots grow in an undesirable direction toward your home’s foundation, plumbing lines, power lines, or utility lines they may need to get cut back. If you fear your tree’s roots could be causing damage, ask about our foundation protecting root barrier installation service.
We user our root grinders to shred roots that are visible at the surface and invasive underground roots that pose a risk to surrounding objects or installations.
Surface Root Removal Questions & Answers
Pricing to remove tree roots varies because of many factors. The number of roots that need pruning, ease with which the roots can be accessed, tree species, and geographic area are all factors that affect pricing but you can expect to pay at least $250 to have a medium oak tree’s roots trimmed above ground in the Houston, Texas area.
Oak tree roots grow to a depth of two to five feet, and a mature oak tree’s roots can grow longer than 200 feet. This is why oak tree roots near homes or other structures are considered invasive.
The maximum depth a tree stump and its roots should be ground down to remove it properly is 6 feet below the surrounding surface soil. Any deeper than that is excessive and puts plumbing pipes, gas lines, and electrical lines at risk. It also puts landscaping, pools, decks, patios, and other non-biodegradable materials at risk. In rare cases, deeper stump grinding may be necessary at a higher cost depending on the specific type of tree, health, and age.
Surface roots account for a very small fraction of a tree’s root system so grinding troublesome surface roots does not cause any harm to healthy trees. If a tree is already sick, diseased, or infested we would probably recommend a deep root feeding to nourish the tree at the time of the surface root grinding to prevent any adverse effects. Grinding surface roots actually prevents damage to utility lines, pipes, and electrical lines underground. It also prevents root damage to sidewalks, patios, slabs, and pools from roots lifting and cracking the concrete.
